Lake Cumberland State Resort Park: The Making of…

In 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker, a pioneering figure, ventured into Kentucky, where he encountered a magnificent river flowing from the southeastern mountains of the state. Captivated by its grandeur, he christened it the Cumberland River, in honor of the Duke of Cumberland, son of England’s King George II. Two centuries later, the landscape changed dramatically with the construction of the Wolf Creek Dam, forming what we now know as Lake Cumberland, boasting an impressive 1,255 miles of shoreline and covering 63,000 surface acres.

Fast forward to January 1, 1951, when the Secretary of the Army allocated 2,791 acres of land to Kentucky for the development of a state park recreation area. Construction promptly commenced on a Lodge and access road, culminating in the completion of an outstanding park facility by 1953. Originally dubbed Lure Lodge due to its proximity to the renowned Lake Cumberland fishing spots, it later became known as Pumpkin Creek Lodge when the current Lodge emerged in the 1960s. Crafted with park labor, Pumpkin Creek Lodge featured 15 rooms, a dining area accommodating 40 guests, and a welcoming entrance lounge adorned with a rustic stone fireplace.

The demand for dock facilities surged with the creation of the new lake, leading to the completion of a new dock in 1952. Initially situated at the old Rowena Ferry site, it was later relocated to its present location after the park road’s construction. Throughout the 1950s, park development continued with the addition of 19 rustic vacation cottages, a campground, service facilities, roads, parking areas, and general landscaping efforts, coupled with the acquisition of additional acreage to safeguard the park entrance.

In September 1962, the new Lure Lodge graced the landscape, perched atop a steep cliff overlooking the expansive waters of Lake Cumberland. Initially boasting 24 guest rooms, an expansion initiative ensued, incorporating an additional 24 rooms and an indoor swimming pool into the Lodge’s amenities.

The 1960s marked a period of heightened popularity for Kentucky State Parks, reflected in the enhancements made at Lake Cumberland. New additions included 10 ranch-style 2-bedroom cabins, trails, tennis courts, playgrounds, dock expansions, a community pool, and a gift shop.

As the 1970s dawned, the completion of the 10 Wildwood cottages, along with the Activities Center, Country Store, mini-golf course, picnic area, and employee residences, further enriched the park’s offerings.

In the winter of 1980, Pumpkin Creek Lodge underwent its first major renovation, modernizing its accommodations while preserving its original structure. Today, Lake Cumberland State Resort Park continues its legacy of progress, with ongoing renovations in 2020 including updates to the campground, outdoor and indoor swimming pools, Conference Center, and hotel facilities.

Notably, Lake Cumberland State Dock has flourished over the years, now boasting the largest collection of rental houseboats in the entire United States. Renowned for its houseboat rentals, the dock also offers smaller watercraft such as pontoons, ski boats, jet skis, paddleboards, kayaks, and fishing boats, ensuring visitors an unforgettable experience on Lake Cumberland’s pristine waters.
